However, these type of evolutions need limits, strong leadership and a command structure that recognizes the risks of crossing the lines and the fact that you cannot count on the candidate/recruit to quit when pushed past that line. While I am all in favor or programs and organizations that have training that pushes a person to his /her limits and stretches the bonds of teamwork, and that may include actions that many on the outside may perceive as "hazing" (there is sometimes a fine line between hazing and deliberately enhancing training to increase stress and pressure). It is meant to challenge and push a Recruit to his /her limits, and I recall being a young 18 year old (and with other young 18 year olds ) - no one wants to be the one who gives in, drags town the team, and quits. This occurred during the Marine Corps Crucible -which I understand is the penultimate challenge at Marine Corps Boot Camp kinda like Hell Week for SEALS. The article focuses more on the DI's toxic culture and then recommends rolling up the chain of command for accountability. 1st Class Dalton Beals became separated from his unit in a similar way and was not treated in time. Then went back and found him and he suffered permanent kidney or liver damage and was dropped from the course (and probably never commissioned). He wasn't discovered as missing until after the event was completed and we formed up. We had one candidate who fell further and further behind and collapsed out of sight of the Sergeant Instructors, Corpsman, etc on the course. Some of the courses involved running through the woods on a narrow path. Many of the events were individually scored (every man for himself). The summer I went through OCS was a particularly hot one. ![]() I have one personal anecdote that might explain how something like this can happen. I, too, have no idea how the set of circumstances aligned and led to this tragic death. ![]()
